What Candidates Really Want in Today’s Market: Compensation Matters, but It’s Not the Whole Story
Compensation still matters. It always will. But in today’s hiring market, it’s no longer the deciding factor it once was.
As a Recruiting Manager, I spend my days having honest conversations with candidates across industries and experience levels. What’s become increasingly clear is that candidates are no longer making decisions based on salary alone. They are evaluating roles, leaders, and organizations through a much broader lens.

IT Professional – Rochester, NY
This candidate has approximately 20 years of experience in IT support and systems administration, with a strong background in executive-level support and end-to-end ownership of IT environments. Most recently, they served as the primary IT resource supporting a family business, handling all aspects of technology including hardware, system configuration, Microsoft and Azure environments, account setup, networking, and conference room support. Their role has required significant remote and phone-based support, as well as hands-on troubleshooting when needed, and exposure to security tools such as Netskope. They have also provided oversight to field engineers in prior roles, demonstrating informal leadership without direct people management. With current changes driven by an organizational restructuring, they are seeking an IT support or systems administrator role that allows them to continue supporting users, primarily remotely, while leveraging their broad technical skill set and steady, self-directed working style.

IT Professional – Rochester, NY
This candidate has been working in IT since 2008, with experience spanning enterprise application support, end-user services, and infrastructure operations in complex, multi-site environments. In their current role, they manage escalated support beyond the help desk, handling on-site troubleshooting, hardware replacements, networking tasks, printers, power systems, and modern device management using Azure and Intune across hundreds of end users and dozens of locations. They have prior leadership experience overseeing a small infrastructure team and are intentionally working toward a future people-management role. Their background includes time in managed services and fast-paced enterprise support environments, giving them exposure to a wide range of technologies and client needs. Known for strong communication and change management, they have played a key role in stabilizing and modernizing a previously outdated environment through infrastructure upgrades, security awareness training, and user education, and are now motivated by opportunities that offer continued technical and leadership growth.
